Budding Blend Tri-Grow : Perlite Soil Amendment

A white, sterile substance, perlite comes from volcanic matter. The matter itself gets heated until it pops, creating the lightweight perlite. Cavities cover the entire surface of each perlite particle, enabling it to retain moisture for plants and trap air to aerate soil. You can buy perlite in several grades, or coarseness.

Soil Amendment

As a soil conditioner amendment, the perlite in Budding Blend increases the total amount of air-holding capacity in top soil. This in return allows water to drain more efficently and prevents total compaction. More aeration ensures plants will send out a broader root system. Also this perlite soil amendment works to retain moisture through water remediation, while still allowing better drainage through the soil.

Perlite

Perlite originates from volcanoes and is primarily used a medium to germinate seeds. The additive prevents root loss and increases transplant rate. For houseplants, the Budding Blend perlite mix can decrease the weight of the pot. To use Budding Blend perlite, simply mix the included soil, sand, perlite mix straight into your landscapes soil. For use in the garden, spread Budding Blend directly on soil surface and, with a rototiller or spade, mix it thoroughly into the dirt. Mix perlite with peat moss and dampen to create a mixture for transplanting, planting and propagating. Since perlite is a soil amendment and not a fertilizer, remember to add fertilizer to your plants.

Top Soil

Top Soil
Topsoil helps plants grow and helps prevent erosion.

Topsoil is just that. The top 12 inches of soil where the roots of your plants reside. It denotes location, not necessarily quality. The next level down or subsoil is thicker, usually harder.

Experts agree that it's wise to take a look and touch before purchase. Better yet, ask for loam. You're interested in a loose, non sticky, crumb-like mixture. And, if necessary, you might want to aerate (add oxygen), depending what's commercially available in your region (see perlite and vermiculite).

Last, once you've decided you mix (perhaps three bags of topsoil and 1 bag of perlite), consider where you want to put it once you bring it home or have it delivered. It the latter, definitely make the area with stakes of some sort.

We offer Topsoil in bag, bucket, full scoop, dump truck, and tri-axle quantities. To order call (717) 737-2511 or click the quote button at the bottom of this page.

Perlite

Perlite
Perlite is a great soil amendment and concrete aggregate.

Perlite is a volcanic glass mineral that is mined and then heated to create a lighter, snowy-to-grayish-white material. In turn, this expanded version is useful in both the construction and horticulture fields, particularly when added to other substances.

Combining with concrete mixes results in lightweight aggregates to improved sound insulation and fireproof safety. Whereas, blending with potting soils allows for increased oxygen flow (aeration) and soil conditioning.

We offer Perlite in bag, bulk bag, and pallet quantities.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite
Vermiculite is a highly desired soil amendment and concrete aggregate.

Vermiculite consists of water in-between sheets of silicate. Once mined, and then heated, it expands to produce a whitish material with properties much like those of its mineral cousin, perlite. That is, its lightweight quality, which makes it easy and beneficial to use in construction and gardening settings.

According to masons, a general rule of thumb is three parts vermiculite to one part concrete. Combining with Portland cement produces a light aggregate, which often forms the smooth surfaces of in-ground swimming pools.

Avid gardeners attest that blending it with soil provides aeration and prevents nutrient loss. Thus, enabling them to water less frequently--especially during the growing season and summer droughts. A 50/50 mix is suitable for container plants; whereas a 25/75 mix is fine for beds.

An important side note is that regulators routinely test vermiculite for its purities.

We offer Vermiculite in bag, bulk bag, and full pallet quantities.
